XAT Exam 2027: Registration Process, Dates, Syllabus, Pattern, Question Papers & Prep Tips
Course: MBA
If CAT feels like the exam everyone talks about, XAT is the one serious MBA aspirants quietly respect a little more — mostly because of its Decision Making section, which trips up even strong CAT scorers every single year. XAT 2026 has already been conducted, so if you're planning your MBA admission for the 2027-29 batch, XAT 2027 is the one on your radar now. Registration for it is already open, so let's get straight into the details.
What is XAT?
XAT, or the Xavier Aptitude Test, is one of India's oldest and most respected MBA entrance exams, conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). With a legacy of over 75 years, XAT is widely regarded as India's second-largest MBA entrance exam after CAT. It's the mandatory exam for admission to XLRI, and its scores are also accepted by 250+ other B-schools, including XIM Bhubaneswar, MICA, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI New Delhi, KJ Somaiya, and TAPMI.
XAT 2027 Exam Date
XAT 2027 will be held on Sunday, January 3, 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, in computer-based mode across 100+ test cities in India.
XAT 2027 Registration Dates
- Registration opened: July 15, 2026
- Registration closes: December 6, 2026
Registration is live right now on the official website — xatonline.in. Given how close the exam is to the New Year period, it's genuinely worth registering early rather than pushing it to the December deadline, when server load tends to spike.
XAT 2027 Registration Fee
- Standard registration fee: ₹2,300
- Additional fee per XLRI programme selected: ₹200
- For candidates applying via GMAT/GRE (Indian): ₹2,600
- For NRI / Foreign / PIO / OCI candidates applying via GMAT: ₹5,000
If you're applying to a specific XLRI programme (like BM or HRM) alongside the general XAT exam, that's an added cost on top of the base registration fee — so factor that in while budgeting.

Eligibility Criteria
Here's something that surprises a lot of first-time XAT aspirants — there's no minimum percentage requirement to sit for the exam itself.
- A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university
- Final-year students can also apply
- No specific cutoff percentage is required at the registration stage — your academic performance matters later, during shortlisting and profile evaluation by individual institutes, not as a barrier to appearing for XAT itself
XAT 2027 Exam Pattern
XAT's structure is genuinely different from CAT's, and that's part of what makes it tougher for many students:
| Part | Sections | Questions | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part 1 | Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation | 75 | 170 minutes |
| Part 2 | General Knowledge (GK) | 20 | 10 minutes |
| Total | 95 | 180 minutes |
A few things that set XAT apart:
- Five answer options per question (CAT has four)
- No sectional time limits within Part 1 — you can move between sections freely
- An on-screen scientific calculator is available during the exam
- The GK section carries no negative marking and doesn't count toward your overall percentile, but XLRI does use it during final selection
- Analytical Essay Writing (AEW) has been removed from the written exam and is now assessed during the GD/PI stage instead
The Decision Making section is XAT's real differentiator — it tests judgment under constraints rather than pure aptitude, and it's the section most CAT-focused aspirants tend to underprepare for.
