GATE 2027: Exam Date, Eligibility, Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Preparation Tips and More

Published on: 15 May 2026

Every engineering student reaches a point where they have to decide what comes next. A job? A master's degree? A PSU career? For most, the answer runs through one exam — GATE. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is not just another entrance exam. It is a single score that can unlock an M.Tech seat at an IIT, a research position at a top institute, or a high-paying government job in a Public Sector Undertaking. GATE 2026 is now over, and the spotlight has shifted to GATE 2027. If you are planning to appear, this is your complete guide.

What is GATE 2027?

GATE is a national-level examination conducted every year jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven IITs on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The exam tests a candidate's understanding of undergraduate-level subjects in engineering, technology, architecture, and science. GATE 2027 will be conducted by IIT Madras and is expected to cover around 30 different papers across disciplines. The exam will be held in February 2027 in a fully online Computer-Based Test format.

GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria

One of the best things about GATE is how inclusive its eligibility criteria are. Here is who can apply:

If you are currently in the third year or higher of a four-year B.Tech or B.E. programme, you are eligible. If you have already completed your graduation, you can apply too. Final-year M.Sc. students in Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Applications are also eligible. There is absolutely no age limit for GATE 2027. You can appear as many times as you want — there is no cap on attempts either. Indian citizens and foreign nationals from Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia, and the UAE are all eligible to apply.

How to Register for GATE 2027

The registration process is entirely online through the GOAPS portal. You will need to create an account, fill in your personal and academic details, upload your photograph, signature, and required documents, and pay the application fee online. After submission, download your confirmation page and keep it safe. A correction window will also be available in November 2026 for candidates who need to fix errors in their application.

GATE 2027 Application Fee

Female candidates, SC, ST, and PwD candidates pay Rs. 900 during the regular registration period. All other Indian candidates pay Rs. 1,800. If you apply after the regular deadline, a late fee applies and the total goes up significantly. The fee is completely non-refundable, so make sure all your details are correct before submitting.

GATE 2027 Exam Pattern

Understanding the exam structure before you begin preparation is absolutely essential. GATE 2027 will have 65 questions worth 100 marks in total. The exam duration is 3 hours.

Every paper has two sections. The General Aptitude section is common to all papers and carries 15 marks. The subject-specific section carries 85 marks. For most engineering papers, this 85-mark section is split between Engineering Mathematics worth 13 marks and Core Technical Subjects worth 72 marks.

Three types of questions are asked. Multiple Choice Questions carry negative marking — one-third mark deducted for a wrong one-mark answer and two-thirds mark deducted for a wrong two-mark answer. Multiple Select Questions and Numerical Answer Type questions carry no negative marking. You can also choose up to two papers during registration, subject to approved combinations.

GATE 2027 Syllabus

GATE 2027 covers 30 papers. Some of the major ones include Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Chemical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Biotechnology, Architecture and Planning, and Life Sciences.

The syllabus is based on undergraduate-level study in your respective discipline. IIT Madras will release the official and detailed syllabus along with the GATE 2027 notification in August 2026. Until then, you can safely refer to the GATE 2026 syllabus as a starting point since the syllabus rarely changes significantly from year to year.

GATE 2027 Expected Cutoff

The qualifying cutoff for GATE varies by paper and category. Based on GATE 2025 cutoff trends, here are some reference figures:

Mechanical Engineering — General: 35.8 marks

Civil Engineering — General: 29.2 marks

Computer Science — General: 29.2 marks

Electrical Engineering — General: 25.0 marks

Electronics and Communication — General: 25.0 marks

Data Science and AI — General: 29.0 marks

OBC and EWS candidates typically need around 90 percent of the General cutoff, while SC and ST candidates need around 66 percent. The GATE 2027 cutoff will be officially released with the results in March 2027.

What Happens After GATE 2027?

Clearing GATE 2027 with a good score opens multiple doors. Qualified candidates can apply for M.Tech and Ph.D. admissions at IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other top institutions through the COAP counselling portal. Several major PSUs including ONGC, BHEL, IOCL, NTPC, Power Grid, and GAIL recruit engineering graduates directly based on their GATE score. The scorecard remains valid for three years, giving you multiple opportunities to use it across admission cycles and PSU recruitment drives.

Preparation Tips for GATE 2027

Start by going through the full syllabus of your chosen paper. Understand exactly which topics are included and which carry more weightage. Then build a structured study plan with monthly and weekly targets.

Solve previous year GATE question papers from the last seven to ten years. This is the most effective preparation strategy because it shows you the actual pattern of questions, the difficulty level, and the topics that appear repeatedly.

Take full-length mock tests once you have covered more than half of your syllabus. Mock tests build your time management skills and highlight weak areas before the actual exam day.

Never ignore General Aptitude. It carries 15 marks and is completely scoring with regular practice. Ignoring it means leaving easy marks behind.

Revise every topic at least twice. Many students cover the entire syllabus but score poorly because they do not revise consistently. Make revision a weekly habit, not a last-minute activity.

Final Word

GATE 2027 is a real opportunity for every engineering graduate who wants to take their career to the next level. The exam is competitive, but it rewards consistent effort and smart preparation. Thousands of students crack it every year — and they are not necessarily the most talented ones. They are the most disciplined ones. Start early, follow a plan, and make every week count between now and February 2027.
